The City

The City of Shawinigan is a major urban centre with a population of 51,958. This new city was established on January 1st, 2002 with the merger of seven municipalities, i.e. Shawinigan, Shawinigan-Sud, Grand-Mère, Lac-à-la-Tortue, Saint-Georges-de-Champlain, Saint-Gérard-des-Laurentides, and Saint-Jean-des-Piles. The City of Shawinigan covers a total area of 952 square kilometres, including the land occupied by the Parc National du Canada de la Mauricie.

Shawinigan has been the uncontested leader of the industrial revolution of the last century with activities such as:

  • Construction of the first major hydro-electric complex in Quebec
  • Construction of the first aluminium plant in Canada (the second in North America)
  • Construction of the first aluminium smelter in Canada (on October 21, 1901)
  • Construction of the largest electrochemical complex in Canada.

History

The City of Shawinigan was born out of the industrial revolution of the early 20th century with the first production of pulp and paper, aluminium, and hydro-electricity; such industries being largely responsible for the industrialization of Canada.

This unique tale of the great adventure of the last 100 years Quebec’s industrial history is celebrated and chronicled by the Cité de l’Énergie (City of Energy) theme park.

Looking Ahead

Proud of its industrial past, Shawinigan is now banking on diversity to revive its economy. Through close partnership with various stakeholders in the region, Shawinigan has adopted a new economic development and diversification plan to once again become the thriving city it once was.

Four sectors have been targeted as a priority:

  • Energy and Energy Efficiency
  • Transportation Equipment
  • Metal Processing
  • Electronics and Information and Communication Technology

With major players such as the Centre of Excellence in Energy Efficiency (C3E) and the Laboratory of Energy Technologies (LTE), not to mention its strategic location, skilled labour force, and dynamic economic environment, Shawinigan has everything it takes to attract investors who are looking with increased interest at the land and buildings available for their projects.

Entrepreneurship is also experiencing strong growth in Shawinigan. Whether new or experienced in the business world, an increasing number of entrepreneurs and self-employed individuals are choosing to invest in a city that is dear to them, thereby contributing to the creation of new jobs and building a strong entrepreneurial mindset.

Shawinigan has also taken significant steps over the last several years to promote its unique culture and charm, becoming a favourite and popular travel destination. The Parc National de la Mauricie and the Cité de l’Énergie attract thousands of visitors each year. The majestic Saint-Maurice River and the many cycling routes are other favourites, offering nature lovers and adventure seekers breathtaking views of the countryside.

Quality infrastructures such as the Centre Bionest, Espace Shawinigan, and the Centre des Congrès have made Shawinigan one of the best destinations in Quebec when it comes to tourism, conventions, and organizing sports events.
